8.E.1.1 Hydrosphere
8.E.1.1 Hydrosphere Vocabulary Terms- The structure of the hydrosphere including water distribution on Earth, local river basins and water availability
Water Cycle- the journey water takes as it circulates from the land to the sky and back again.
Fresh Water-Water that does not contain salt
Saltwater-water that contains salt; found primarily in oceans
Ground water- the water found in cracks and pores in sand, gravel and rocks below the Earth’s surface
Aquifer- An underground layer of rock that contains water; most of our water comes from aquifers
Atmosphere-the whole mass of air that surrounds the Earth (air)
Lithosphere- Solid, outer portion of the Earth (land)
Biosphere-part of the Earth that contains living things (living things)
Hydrosphere-All the water on and below the Earth’s surface and in the atmosphere (water)

8.E.1.2 Oceans
8.E.1.2 Vocabulary Terms- Summarize evidence that Earth's oceans are a reservoir of nutrient, mineral, dissolved gases, and life forms
Estuary- body of water formed where freshwater from rivers and streams flows into the ocean, mixing with the seawater which helps produce biological activity.
Upwelling- the movement of nutrient-rich waters from the deep ocean into shallow areas; brings nutrients to marine organisms on the surface.
Marine ecosystem Any marine environment, from pond to ocean, in which plants and animals interact with the chemical and physical features of the environment.
Salinity-saltiness or dissolved salt contents of a body of water
Aquatic-of relating to water
Terrestrial- of relating to land
Hydrothermal vent- cracks in the ocean crust that release mineral-rich water that has been heated inside the earth
Phytoplankton- Tiny organisms that are moved by ocean currents
Sonar- Used to measure ocean depth
Oceanic Trench- The deepest part of an ocean
Photic zone-The upper zone of the ocean where sunlight can penetrate
Aphotic zone- Deepest zone of the ocean where no sunlight penetrates
